Once an addict always an addict....

Hi, I'm Nin, and I'm a coffee-addict.

I'm sad and ashamed to say that I am once again addicted to my drug of choice, caffeine. Doesn't take long for a recovering addict, a few hits of the good stuff for a few days in a row and you're back on the addiction rollercoaster of headaches and daily fatigue. I should've just said no....

I did well throughout the pregnancy. My hubby was gentle in weening me off the juice just prior to getting pregnant. He started by adding a little bit of half-caf to my coffee in the mornings, then eventually it was all half-caf. He then added decaf into my half caf, until eventually it was all decaf, and voila, my body couldn't even tell the difference. I enjoyed a cup of the real stuff here and there as a treat, like most normal people do, but that was where it stayed. But as soon as I was no longer pregnant, and no longer breast-feeding, I went overboard. I have fallen off the wagon. What do I have to show for it all? A splitting headache in the morning that will last all day, that only a shot of the enemy that got me into this mess can conquer. Tylenol is no match for the caffeine headache, any coffee addict can attest to that.

So what do I do? Does my future hold infinite headaches? Grumpy mornings? Sleepy days? Possibly panhandling to support my addiction?

Time will tell.... They say the addict has to hate their sin...

But I love that bean

  1. coffee...a love hate relationship.

My latte's are such a ritual. The fresh smell of esspresso brewing on my stove, the warm milk, sitting on my couch and gazing into my neighbourhood enjoying the quietest time of the day for me. Sipping my latte, with my "best of Bach" playing softly through the speakers......
    AHHhhhhhhh.....sigh.....

    Without it tho....
splitting headache, dragging my butt by 11:00 am and you can count this day to not go very well.....

It is dumb, but it's so sweet....
    I know what you mean.
WE could panhandle together, with a sign that said,
"Broke and need coffee, too polite to steal"
(has anyone seen that guy holding that sign???)Except his sign says, broke and hungry, too polite to steal...

  4. I'm a caffeine fiend...so is my hubby. We drink way more coffee when we are around each other...total enablers.
I have cut back though. I make a little pot that gives me 2 cups of coffee in the morning and then I have one more in the afternoon.
I really couldn't function without it though.

Hmmmmm... I have no cure for coffee addiction. I've been doing my best to stay away from caffeine in general - but it's tough. It's in EVERYTHING, including CHOCOLATE. (My latest crave). I just had a chart given to me recently with the recommended daily amount of caffeine a pregnant and/or breastfeeding mother can consume. Coffee was at the top, and one cup basically covers the daily caffeine allowance. Interestingly enough, my mom drank coffee throughout her pregnancies - and my brother and I are both all in one piece, and (for the most part) quite normal. So... drink at your own risk. At this point, I don't know that you could really be doing too much harm.
